Now let’s dive in!

First, let’s define Imposter Syndrome and how can we transform it into confidence.

Imposter Syndrome is the persistent inability to believe one’s success is deserved. It also shows up as fear that success won’t come because you feel undeserving.

Imposter Syndrome is rooted in unworthiness. And I’ve learned that this feeling can be broken down into three energies: fake, fraud, and fear. Now let’s go deeper into these energies and see how you can alchemize them into confidence.

#1 The energy of fake

If you’re feeling fake, ask yourself where that feeling is coming from.

Where do you need to allow yourself to feel a little more like yourself?

Is it safe to sometimes stumble over your words and keep going?

Are you willing to be imperfect on camera?

When I started out, I didn’t have clients or content, and I felt so uncomfortable that I was crying myself to sleep every night. Now I know that’s completely normal! I was growing new muscles.

I had to let myself feel that feeling of floating in outer space and learn to create something from nothing. I started by slowly bringing my own original ideas to the table and the more I did this, the more my confidence grew.

#2 The energy of fraud

When you feel like a fraud, there’s a part of you that’s afraid of deceiving somebody. I invite you to reflect on that and ask these questions:

Have you been deceived by someone in the past?

What’s your relationship with authority like?

Have you ever been misguided by an authority figure or a mentor?

If any of this has happened to you, then it’s no wonder you might feel a little bit like a fraud yourself. Ask yourself, “How do I want to commit to doing it differently?”

In the early days of my business, I had a PDF document with all the deliverables I was going to provide to my clients. I knew that my successful business depended on me learning how to fulfill my promises.

I would print out a copy of that PDF and as I was working with my clients, I would check off each one and show my clients where they had made progress. This helped remind me and my clients of the concrete results we were working on, and it gave me the confidence to stand by my offerings.

#3 The energy of fear

I still feel fear on a daily basis, but I’ve learned a simple way to work with it. I learned a practice long ago… to take my fear, scoop it up, put it in the passenger seat or even in the back seat, and remind my fear that it’s not in charge.

I remind myself that I am here to change lives, and that fear doesn’t get to weigh in on my decisions. When you make your commitment to show up even one degree bigger than your fear, you’ll be surprised at what starts to happen.

A final note about Imposter Syndrome…

You’re not meant to do any of this alone. We need people to reflect our own brilliance, goodness, and commitment back to us. We need community to normalize the fact you’re building a business – and for many of us that means taking your heart out of your body and putting it out in the world for people to pay you for it. This is a vulnerable act!
