My Journey to Virtual Events: A Rollercoaster Ride

When the world turned upside down in 2020 and live events were canceled, I was devastated. Our biggest live event with over 700 women had to go virtual within days, and honestly, I was stressed. I didn’t know how we’d pull it off. I spent the weekend working, crying, and hugging friends (before we knew we weren’t supposed to be hugging).

But what happened next? Our virtual event turned out to be the most successful launch we’ve ever had—almost a million in sales.

It was a big moment for me and really opened my eyes to the possibilities of virtual events. Now, with everyone spending more time online, the time to go virtual is NOW. Whether it’s a webinar, masterclass, live stream, or multi-day event, you can create something powerful. And guess what? People are hungry for it.

Types of Virtual Events To Find Dream Clients

There are so many ways to get started with virtual events, like:

  • Webinars for delivering targeted content.
  • Masterclasses for a deep dive into your expertise.
  • Facebook challenges for fun, interactive community building.

Facebook challenges are especially close to my heart because they bring gamification into the mix. By encouraging people to take action and share their experiences, you create a vibrant, engaged community. And this concept of interaction is key to making any virtual event successful.

The Secret Sauce to a Successful Virtual Event

What I’ve learned is that a successful virtual event isn’t just about dumping content onto people. It’s about creating connection. People are craving community and belonging now more than ever. If you can give them that, you’ll stand out & create raving fans.

To make your virtual event rock, you need to:

  1. Break Up the Content: Too much information all at once can be overwhelming. I always say, “Impression without expression leads to depression.” You’ve got to give your audience a chance to interact and express themselves. Whether it’s through a live Q&A or a breakout session, make sure they’re part of the conversation.
  2. Gamify the Experience: I love adding challenges and action steps at the end of each session. These little tasks get people engaged and excited. Think about it—when people are actively participating, they’re more invested and more likely to remember what they’ve learned.
  3. Create Connection: Use tools like breakout rooms in Zoom to allow people to interact in smaller groups. It’s a great way to make your event more intimate and give your audience a chance to collaborate and share.

How to Structure Your Virtual Event

Let’s talk timing. For a full-day event, a schedule like 10 AM to 3 PM or 11 AM to 4 PM works well. Keep your teaching segments short—20 to 30 minutes at a time—and break them up with activities like discussions, guest speakers, and interactive challenges.

I also like to offer a workbook that participants can fill out as they go along. By the end of the event, they’ll have something tangible to walk away with—a roadmap for their next steps.
