Sage Lavine

00:02:15

Thank you so much. I also love that it honors all women, right? Like I think as we step into the heart of our businesses, the soul of our businesses. Colette, you and I were just talking about this. It’s like who we choose to become like becomes our niche. I’ve seen you do that. Like you’re so much more than a spiritual medium. You’re so much more than an Oracle guide, you know, and you have an incredible successful multi-seven figure business. I hope it’s okay to say that. I’m just so proud of where you’ve gotten as a spiritual woman, right? Like you are letting your spiritual flag fly big time and it’s so admirable and you’re so clean with your energy.

Can you tell us about that journey? We have many women here that are on a spiritual journey themselves.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:03:02

I want to go backwards a little bit, back to our conversation, we were talking about what could be some of the obstacles that, you know, for a woman entrepreneur…I started out doing readings while I was pursuing another career. I was in music. So I was like, “I don’t really do this. I’m really a singer. Don’t come back next year.” So I actually, I’m amazed that I am where I am today because I almost quit because it was too easy. I just was born like this. I’ve been doing it. And it’s true. I’ve been full time in the intuitive arts for 33 years full time. It’ll be 34 years. This year will be my 34th year. And next year is going to be my 35th year full-time in this nusiness.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:03:44

My success came of course before the internet. Right? So there was, I’ve been doing this a long time. So I had workshops. These are like, when you phone friends and invite them, or you put up a flyer on a pole.

Sage Lavine

00:04:02

I remember those days. I used to do that.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:04:05

Right. I mean, I’m going to be 63 years old this year. You know, when I remember getting a deal with Hay House, I remember hay house saying to mesomething about a list, right? I was like, “What’s a list?” So I didn’t even know…. I would throw away the names. I was like, ah! So when I think back about when you are really authentic and really meant to be doing what you’re doing, even those things of not having a list and not having a good website and not having all the things that we think are really necessary right now, they’re not going to stand in your way because your authenticity and your calling that comes through you actually paves the way for your success.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:04:51

You know, when people tell me now, young women entrepreneurs that say, “You know, wow, I don’t have a website. I took this course and they told me I have to have all these famous people saying stuff about me and stuff like that.” And I’m like, “Are you kidding me?” Like, why do you feel like it’s yes, there’s no one way.Take what you like. There’s lots of ways. I know you have a lot.

We agree on those things, right?

Sage Lavine

00:05:16

Yeah. Right? I mean, I always say, come and learn some business strategies so that you have more things to put on the menu of your intuition, because it’s like we have to trust our intuition and we want to start to discern what really is your intuition and what’s not, of course. But it’s like, if you don’t actually have some maps of how to get there, then you don’t always have as many things for the menu of your soul to choose from.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:05:42

Yeah. Well, you know, you just opened up a can of worms here.

Sage Lavine

Let’s go. Let’s dive in.

Colette Baron-Reid

So since I’m really talking to the group of entrepreneurs here, let’s talk about intuition, because that is my intuition expert and that is my jam. I just finished actually teaching a vision board challenge and really was the point was to really get your intentions clear. If you have an intention that you’re going to serve on behalf of the highest good and you are going to contribute rather than get something. Right? So I always say, never think about the money. Just think about your contribution and the money comes, especially in the beginning. [Agreed] Contribute, contribute, contribute.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:06:23

So your intuition is connected to the fact that you are part of the greater consciousness of the whole. I believe in what’s a higher power. You can call it, God, call it…you know, my spirituality is everything to me. So, but I look at it, the conscious universe that I am actually a part of. So inside me is the conscious universe as well. So God is in us, if they and other, if you come from a monotheistic background, as opposed to being out there. So if that is true and I believe that it is once we have determined and committed, cause you have to have the commitment, to an intention, then your intuition tells you, it’s like you take one step towards the gods.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:07:06

They take ten towards you. But one of the steps that they take towards you is the ear whisper where you’re like, “Oh, I think I should do this today. I think I should do that today.” You get these impulses, these very simple illogical, sometimes feelings. That comes to you like just truth. And it makes no sense half the time. It just is. And you follow that. Whereas wishful thinking is when you want something for your business and you want to be something. I’m a perfect example of this. I wanted to be a singer songwriter, even though I became one later on…but it was like, “I want, I want, I’m going to get, and I’m going to do this.”

Colette Baron-Reid

00:07:46

That’s not that. That’s wishful thinking is when you think you go, Oh, I can maneuver this. You’re maneuvering is always curiosity. It’s like surprising and it comes out every day. On top of the chop wood carry water stuff that you have to do, but your business is also alive. You are in a relationship to this living being that has its own spirituality to it. So that’s the other thing. If you could actually look at your business, not just as an extension of you and your contribution, but something that you’re nurturing that’s alive, right? Then it’s a whole other relationship that you ended up having with and it becomes deeply spiritual.

Sage Lavine

00:08:31

I love that you just said that. Because in the beginning, I like to use the analogy that it is like a little sapling and it’s delicate. We have to be careful who we share that dream with. There’s a lot of people out there that have not gone for their dreams and that will be naysayers and the face of your business dream, your baby business. The more you nurture it and the more you honor it, and the more it grows, then it’s something you get to continue to lean into. You know, it shows up for you and the same way that you show up for it. You know, Colette, when I hear you talk about your business, I feel like you’re having this love affair with it. I would love to just know more about what has the challenge has been for you and how did you get to be in this sort of thriving, spiritual relationship with your business?

Colette Baron-Reid

00:09:14

Well, I’ll be honest with you in the very beginning the biggest challenge I had was the huge chip on my shoulder that I was too weird. Right? When I started this work, we were very fringe… astrology, I mean the horoscopes and the newspaper, but doing readings was and intuitive counseling or, you know, and my background is in psychology. So I had a background and, you know, and a lot of different healing arts as well to, and when I started doing readings, it was literally to do something else, but it was, he told somebody that you did that. They’re like, “I don’t believe in that” or something. It was not recognized as it is right now, certainly with the younger generation as something that’s mainstream or hip or cool, it was, it was like, “Wow, what is that?”

Colette Baron-Reid

00:09:56

So I came from that…It’s funny because I came from an academic background. I went to law school and I never finished my degree in psychology. So I came from a family where that was number one. So for me, the biggest challenge was thinking I wasn’t enough. That was something I had to overcome. I do feel that our biggest challenges are not the structure of our businesses, but it’s the way we view ourselves and how we see who we are because the business works as a filter of us. If we’re entrepreneurs, likely your business is a personality brand or in some way, linked to who you are.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:10:36

So for me that was the biggest hurdle. I was also newly sober when I started doing this. I’m 35 years clean and sober. So for me, I had a lot of spiritual growth. My entire world was focused on spiritual growth. So that really helped me. So I was a daily meditator, 90 minutes a day. I meditated at the beginning, like every single day without fail. I had very strong structure, also around doing an inventory. Again, like how the hurdles that I ran into were my fear, my lack of self-worth, my feeling like, “How is this going to be anything?” Because I also knew I had to surrender the results to the divine and I still wanted what I wanted.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:11:17

It was just like, well, where could I find balance between those two things? So, and I went and I’m going to be honest, like, my real big success, like the multi numbers that we’re talking about came when I super niched and I have 14 Oracle card decks out, I asked myself, “What do I love most doing besides writing songs and writing music? I love to create Oracle cards.” So anyway, my Oracle card decks became very popular. I told the president [of Hay House], I said, You know what?…because I’ve always believed that divination was for personal growth and transformation.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:11:58

I never really saw it as a predictive tool because I moved my business support ,my work as an intuitive strategist for big business men actually was. I did years of that because I got bored telling people about their boyfriends and stuff. I thought I’d rather influence the influencers and that’s what ended up happening anyway. But my point is that I took Oracle cards…that is what the heck is that it’s so fringy. That was the tiny little thing. I created a school, but I taught all my transformational content through my school and the curriculum in the school, which was all about the concept of practical spirituality and personal transformation, because I also had a coaching Institute as well for a few years.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:12:44

So I blended everything together only the tool we used were Oracle cards. So when I soon got super niche, that’s when everything blew up and I didn’t do it to blow up. Cause I was perfectly content. Right? We made okay money. I mean, we weren’t making great money, but we could afford our home. You know, our lifestyle, we didn’t have big aspirations until we realized, “Oh, Holy shit.” Like it was like, “What just happened?”

Sage Lavine

00:13:11

You know, I can really relate to this. I’m so glad that you’re pointing to this because even those, you know, we have worked with thousands of clients a year and the ones who are deeply spiritual that have the most success and up niching down. I just had lunch with Marci Shimoff yesterday and you know, Marci is good…She’s been an incredible leader in the personal development area of the coaching space. You know, for the last five, six, seven years, she’s been all about miracles and she’s the miracle woman. Everybody knows that she’s all about miracles. It’s the same thing. It’s like, even if you’re a spiritual mentor, even if you want to be a spiritual leader, like niching down, niching down is exactly what I’ve seen you do.

Sage Lavine

00:13:55

For me, I have the same experience. I mean, I was just like this little startup coach and the Bay area, and I was helping women live their life purpose and figured out what they wanted to do with their lives. The first time I started teaching workshops on launching a purposeful business, I blew up. Especially when I started teaching women how to launch communities, intentional communities of potential clients, not even just business, but here’s how you nurture a community. Here’s how you nurture a community of potential clients. Here’s how you nurture a community online and fill your business, you know, follow your practice and for your business. I went from trying to find clients to having 24 women show up for a workshop.

Sage Lavine

00:14:35

I made $24,000 that night. A few weeks later I did a workshop of 88 women. Then right? Now we’re getting the big numbers of 500, 800 a thousand women coming to our events. I’ve watched you consistently, same thing be clear with your message, but you’re also congruent just in who you are.

Sage Lavine

00:14:52

All right. Colette Baron-Reid

00:16:13

That’s something you, you know, that’s something that we were just talking before about bypassing, right. I don’t bypass, and I’ve had to even do a lot of changes to my business. You know, I’m in the new age section. I remember about three years ago and I started the anti-racism training for example, and realize that, wow, I’ve been this, you know, blind white woman, you know, who’s used native American things because it’s like I was the old…this is all we did. And I’m like, “Oh my God.” I was mortified. But whatever. I mean, I made the commitment to do the work and it’s uncomfortable and it’s important. So, it’s like, for me, if I’m going to show up with my integrity, I have to also look at what the world is requiring of me in order for me to show up for everyone in an equitable way.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:17:00

That means to do my part to clean up my side of the street. I can tell you that. So when you said, Oh, you know something about my integrity, I don’t know what you said, but you know, that is something that people avoid. They just do it for performative reasons. I think right now we are at a very unique time where I believe for a woman in business, that these are the things that we must consider. You know, when we look at our business, are we genuinely stepping into what the world is requiring us at the same time as nurturing what is, what matters to us personally and bringing that contribution forward.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:17:45

But realizing that we have to always be in a process of change and growth, which is hard, there is shadow work to be done in your business.

Sage Lavine

00:18:00

Yeah. Oh yeah. I was doing some this morning.

Colette Baron-Reid

Oh my God. Really important stuff.

Sage Lavine

Because the more visible you get, the more stuff comes up and you, you know, the degree to which your business will grow will be the degree to which you keep up with your business in your personal self.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:18:20

Also, I think, I mean, we have people from 53 countries who attend our things. So I’m not U.S. focused. I’m a Canadian, although a good 70% of our people are Americans and the rest of the 30% of the rest of the world. But you know, there is a global question right now that all of us are being invited into. There’s a dance going on right now. There is certainly, there’s issues around systemic racism. There’s issues around environmentalism. I mean, what each one will say it’s more important than the other. We have to deal with all of that.

So I feel one of the things that I always look at for myself too, is like, you know, how’s my business unique, but also to be discerning. Here’s the other piece.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:19:13

I’m one of these hope warriors. I’m not an activist. If I am an activist only in a quiet way, I do what I do behind the scenes. I’m not going to be sticking a big flag on my business saying, “Look at me! I’m a good person.” Like, that’s just bullshit.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:19:28

So what I do is what is genuinely true is the stuff I’m going to do, just like you did this morning and whatever, I’m going to keep that up. I’m going to keep doing what I do over here. Because not every single one of us has meant to be the mouthpiece for all of this either. So that’s the other thing. Cause I noticed also…people aren’t really sure like, well, “What’s my part?” It’s like, you know, your part is what you do. And then it comes naturally when you’re really the real deal. You don’t need to be performative about anything. You’re really genuinely on the money, but that takes a lot of work and commitment. So a lot of us right now are getting bombarded with, “This is the way it has to be done. No, this was the way it has to be done now.”

Colette Baron-Reid

00:20:09

I think that everybody also online, I’m talking about online, right, is that you may be called out for something, but you also have to be very discerning, like wait a sec. You know, because I think for a period of time there any kind of call was a big deal. Now it’s like, well wait…’cause a it’s nuanced thing.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:20:33

It impacts our businesses. If we’re really here to serve, we’re going to shift our service to the best of our ability in the way that serves our public or that public, that doesn’t just send out a signal that we’re good, but it sends the signal that we’re real.

Sage Lavine

00:20:52

That’s exactly right. It’s like, what you’re speaking to around…my niche doesn’t exist in a bubble, right? This question of, “What am I most passionate? What do I want to give to the world?” can actually get in our own way. Right? It’s like you don’t exist in a bubble. Where is the thing that, what you love to do and the ways you love to be overlaps with what the world is asking you for? Just like what you said, Colette, that like the world is pulling something forth from you and are you willing to step out of your own way enough to give it? I just love what you’re speaking to around the whispers. I have found these whispers to be so integral.

Sage Lavine

00:21:34

You know, my dad just passed away. I’ve been sharing with my community around this, you know, and he came to me and this incredible spiritual encounter and my whispers have since then been even more pronounced, like just the whispers, I felt like another portal opened up between myself and the spiritual oneness that is moving in as in through me. And you know, when you can ask yourself, “What is the one right next thing for me to do today?” and not get overwhelmed by all of the things, the Clubhouse, the apps, the social media, the bright and shiny objects. That stuff will get in your way so fast.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:22:12

I just got on Clubhouse. My husband’s on there and I’m like, you listen. I’m like, I can’t even. I think that’s the thing too, but what’s my next right action and watching the next shiny thing.s I think right now, the world is asking us for something innovative and well, it just, the, the whole aquarian and all these new aquarian influences right now are asking us to be more compassionate and innovative and unique. I loved that you said that Sage, about don’t waste your time and saying, what do I love most? I mean, I already knew that everything I did was around personal transformation and I just needed one thing that I could kind of like lovingly put it in.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:22:56

I was fortunate to do that, but I wasn’t not succeeding before that. So it’s like, I think too, that when the world is requiring something, we have to dial down the noise. That’s what I was really getting at. The discernment means you have to dial it down because I think out of the whole, certainly last year I felt we were riding a wave of guilt and shame and then fear with, you know, with COVID and all these things. There are so many things. And then having successful businesses, many of us, certainly we were online and then like, it was confusing. I mean, we had to pivot in ways we never expected to.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:23:36

That’s the other thing. Let me tell you that. So intuition….and we will be pivoting again, and I’m sure many of us will. That’s why your intuition is more important than listening to that noise. You are not going to find your perfect match to be, to land when you’re listening to the din of other people. Like you might pull something here and there, but don’t look for your answers. Trust that you can expose yourself to information, turn down the dial tones of all the gossip and the bullshit and the… you know, it’s like, this is a year we are nose down.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:24:18

It’s a year for work. It’s a year for understanding that we don’t have all the answers and nobody else does either. We’re all in this together. As long as you are committing on a daily basis to yours, to a connection, to a higher power, that’s going to come, you’re going to know how you’re going to pivot. We were going to do something last summer. Now I happen to be a professional intuitive, but I remember saying to Mark, Nope, “We’re not doing it that way. We’re not going to go do that. And we’re going to go contact the studio where I shot my TV show and we’re going to rent that.” And he goes, “It’s going to cost a fortune.” And I said, “I don’t care.” We’re going to do this like a big ass TV show. AndI said, my intuition was so clear and it didn’t matter how much money was going to cost us.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:25:01

I said, we’re going to give the people the best experience of their lives. Then we’re going to see what happens. And of course what happened was incredible. We had our best year, but it was always about, and also how do I pay all my staff? Our first thing, what we did last year was like, okay, we have 10 employees. How do we make sure that they’re going to be fed? Like we didn’t even think about ourselves. When you put that focus of where your energy is flowing… Your intuition is like trying to help you go to take the next right step that you can’t see because it’s navigating the invisible. If you go looking for it, you won’t see it.

Sage Lavine

00:25:40

Right. I just appreciate you calling us out in order to stay with what’s true and put rails on our experience. I mean, the year that I actually blew up my business, I unsubscribed from like almost every newsletter I was on. I stopped listening to like half the podcast I was listening to. I chose one mentor so that I could really immerse myself in a way to get traction. You know, it’s that willingness to kind of give yourself over, you know, to give yourself over. In my experience, the more I’ve given myself over… you know, we have women in our communities, most of our women end up having some kind of a philanthropic or a humanitarian aspect to their business. …They do it very quietly. It’s not like a “Rah, rah, look at me.” It’s like, this is a part of what actually pulls me forward.

Sage Lavine

00:26:23

We’ve been doing some really cool research, Colette. I forgot to tell you this, that the women that are having these philanthropic components, their businesses are growing faster. It’s just because of this kind of integrated…When we can see that our work is benefiting more than just ourselves and our immediate family, we actually increase our upper limit of what we thought possible. We increase our consciousness.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:26:48

The phrase, I think I coined it. I don’t think anybody else did, but it doesn’t really matter. Maybe I heard it somewhere, but about a year and a half ago, I started talking about something called “compassionate prosperity” That our prosperity and our desire for abundance is just for ourselves and our families. There is a limit to it because we only have so much of availability for that. But if everything that we do helps to reduce the suffering of others in some way, even if you’re just focusing on your client avatar, like they’re going to feel better. You’re going to help them out of X, Y, or Z. That’s your focus. Then we also have a component called deliberate giving. It’s like, where you always are given once a day, you have to do something on a random act of kindness.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:27:29

You have to focus on deliberate giving as it’s flowing. But when you are thinking of compassion as part of this, then you’re elevating others as well. Like if that’s the mindset. “I’m going to do this to elevate them, even though you don’t know the impact.” Right? Like I’ve had to clean up some of the things that I thought were going to have a great impact, but “Oh, that didn’t go very good. Oh, I kinda miss the boat there. Yeah, I got to go back to the drawing board on that one.”

Colette Baron-Reid

00:27:54

You’re always thinking of the impact, right? You’re thinking of that. Right? That’s the philanthropic piece…the thread of philanthropy is all about loving life.

Sage Lavine

00:28:07

Yes, yes, yes, yes. That’s where it actually starts to get fun. I mean, when we stop making it about ourselves, we can do these things more easily. Being an entrepreneur is a huge risk. You know, as we wrap up this interview, I just want to really encourage you guys to remember that getting out of your own way is the fastest thing that’s going to give you that super power of the courage to get visible, to make it about somebody other than yourself. When you wake up in the morning and you’re like, “I don’t want to do this Facebook live. I don’t want to do this post. I don’t feel like it. I felt crunchy.” It’s like, don’t do it for you. Do it for the one person that’s going to watch it and go, “Thank God I listened to that today.” It’s your quickest way out.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:28:52

Last year, I did 300 or over 300, more than 300 of these things called the The Morning Woo.

Sage Lavine

00:29:02

I remember The Morning Woo. Mark was telling me about this.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:29:06

I got up seven days a week to get on my Facebook live on my public page and my Instagram. Just to talk about the carp of the day so that we could get through the day until I got burnt out though. But I have to say, I never thought I was like, “I don’t want to do it, but there’s one…and when one person would write that one person saying ‘you saved me today.’” It was like, I thought, “Okay, I’m going to keep doing it.” And then until I just couldn’t anyway.

Sage Lavine

Well that’s the thing, right? You created…I watched you, you created a barrage of momentum that resulted in your most successful event, your most successful year ever. Maybe we, maybe we should draw a draw card as we wrap this up, let’s draw a card for everybody watching. Let’s send it into your day with a card. You know, I just want to say Colette has chosen Oracle cards as one of the big, you know, entry points, to finding out who she is in her work. But, Colette, because you have Oracle cards as your entry point is something that gets people’s attention because there’s so many of us out there that love Oracle cards. I love Oracle cards.

I love Your Oracle cards. If you haven’t bought Colette’s deck of Oracle cards, go on Amazon, get her cards today. They’re amazing… but it’s like, because she’s chosen something and she’s niched down, she gets to talk to hundreds of thousands of people a month – truly. So I just want to really put a stake in the ground for every single one of you to stop worrying about what it’s going to be. Stop worrying about the niche, but choose something, and keep in mind that the reason you might not have chosen something yet is because you might secretly be afraid of blowing up like some of us have. There’s a card for you.

This is an interesting card. I would never have thought that it would come up, but I think it’s important. Okay. So this is from my deck Spirit Animal. You can choose that for free on my website. By the way, you can use this deck. It’s called Spirit Animal. My father was Slavic. He was Serbian. He taught me how to read Turkish coffee cups when I was young and taught me about spirit animals. So everything that I’ve learned about spirit animals is part of Slavic pagan culture that my father, when he was, it was called to faith. So it was nothing to do with native American stuff. So anyhow, this is Armadillo spirit. It’s about set healthy boundaries.. So even with yourself, so I want you to say to yourself, “My boundaries are sacred.”

Sage Lavine

My boundaries are sacred.

Even with yourself, your boundaries need to be sacred. Like really allowing us… don’t be all over the map going and looking at, “So-and-so’s doing this. Oh, look at that person’s got that going on.” That’s also about transgressing your own boundaries because you’re spilling your energy all over the place by going, “Oh, what if I do that? And what if I do that?” I’ll read it to you.

This is perfect for me today. This is perfect for me. I really needed to hear this.

Colette Baron-Reid

00:32:03

Yeah. Okay. So learning to set healthy boundaries is the gift of armadillo’s spirit. You are entering a phase where in order for you to be in alignment with your intentions and co-create your best life – and that’s the key phrase is “co-create” because I believe I’ve co-created my business with spirit then the people –  you may also have to be discerning and say no to many things that may have been okay for you in the past. This also means that you need to learn where you end and where others begin and where what is yours to own and what is not. Remember, I talked about that earlier also. Limits and understand that it’s an empowering choice to say no to what doesn’t feel right

Colette Baron-Reid

00:32:45

Armadillo spirit is here to tell you it’s time, to be honest with yourself about what you really want, be clear on what you’re agreeing to. Declare what your needs are and say no, as a full sentence. These are acts of respect and kindness to others, as well as to yourself. Trust your body’s signals. That’s where your intuition… your intuition shows up in your body, not your head. Your body is the instrument of intuition, and you will know what to do. This spirit guides you in making good decisions that are grounded in a strong sense of what belongs to you and what does not. So that’s just a really quick summary too about that for everybody,  especially in business, but we’re not just in business, we’re serving people. We’re in communities, right?

Colette Baron-Reid

00:33:29

Like I have an intentional community called the Oracle Circle that, you know, we’re, we have a beautiful boundary around how people can share with each other. So they feel super safe and they can say anything. Certain topics are completely taboo and off the table. So people feel really good. So boundaries are important. You just can’t be flailing around, but you need to know what those are for you. So, it was funny. I thought, Oh, what? That’s an interesting topic today too. And also, no, you can’t say yes to every podcast. That’s the other thing.”I got to have so-and-so on. I’m going to have so-and-so and so-and-so on. And I’m going to say yes, yes, yes.” You’ll be exhausted. Exactly. This is the first podcast I’ve done in ages.
