Welcome to Women Rocking Business, where we are here to help you rock yourself, rock your life, and rock the world as a woman entrepreneur, because the world needs you and the time is now. I’m Sage Lavine, CEO, trainer, unretired camp counselor, and best-selling author of the Hay House book Women Rocking Business. We’ve had the honor of serving over a hundred thousand women entrepreneurs around the globe just like you, who are here to do more, be more, and have more by giving your gift to the planet. So let’s dive in.

Hello women. Hello everyone. I am so excited to be here with Samantha Skelly.

Sage Lavine

00:00:41

OMG, if you have anything going on with you other than bliss and peace and love, we’re going to like clean that right up today. We’re going to give you a tool to help you get to the front side of any anxiety that you feel in your business. Any trepidation you feel when you go to take risks. Samantha is like the girl, the queen of helping you use the power of your breath, which you have with you all the time to clear that stuff out. Samantha, I’m so excited to do this with you.

Sam Skelly

00:01:09

I am so grateful. I’m so, so, so grateful. And I can’t wait to share some, share some love.

Sage Lavine

00:01:16

So just for those of you that don’t know who Sam is… She’s a seven figure entrepreneur. She’s a best-selling author. She’s the best-selling author of Hay House book, Hungry for Happiness. She also founded this thing called Pause Breathwork and listen to this y’all… she is on a mission to unite humanity by helping people breathe, feel, and thrive. Can we just take that in for a minute? Breathe, feel, and thrive. Like we all know that’s what’s needed. Samantha has revolutionized weight loss and self-help by really examining what are these underlying causes behind food and body and self love issues. She’s been on NBC and CBC and BBC and Huffington post and Elephant Journal.

And Samantha’s just like on fire to change the world. She’s the real deal. And Samantha, I just want to start by saying, can I call you Sam?

Sam Skelly

00:02:08

Yes. Anything, Sam, Skelly, whatever, whatever you want, whatever comes through.

Sage Lavine

00:02:12

I just want to start by asking you, like, you know, how did you come to be this queen of breath work and really like claim that as your mission on the planet? Like it’s so powerful and it’s so non-traditional. I think because the women that follow me and a few good men are on such a big mission to make a difference. And some of them are doing things that are really non-traditional, it’s really important for all of us to hear each other’s stories.

Sam Skelly

00:02:39

I love that. So I had a really non-traditional upbringing. I was a child actress and a dancer from a very young age. So most of my life was either on camera, on stage, all of that. So I was deep in the trenches of the entertainment industry at a very young age, all the way up until 18.

Then after I got out of the industry, I was in such a battle with food. I was in such a battle with my body. I was so disconnected. I had a really severe eating disorder from 18 to 23. During that time it was a really interesting experience because I knew better, but I couldn’t do better.

Sam Skelly

00:03:23

There was like this massive disconnection between my mind and my body. My mind is like, you know, all these things, “You basically have a PhD in personal development.” I grew up in the Tony Robbins world. My parents were super into it. So I like I was birthed into the personal development. So my mind was going well, “You know what to do. You know how to, you know how to change your life?”

You know, these things, but my body was trapped in a lot of trauma and my body needed the healing, but I didn’t know how to get there. So I I went on this journey. I was reading, Eat Pray Love. She talks about the little story where she goes to Bali and she finds this medicine man who does like the acupuncture where she gets like poked with sticks.

Sam Skelly

00:04:06

So I said to my mom, I’m like, “Mom, I’m going to go to Bali. I’m going to try and find this medicine man and I’m going to figure out like another way to heal disordered eating.” I had chronic anxiety, exercise addiction, the whole thing.

My mom is so supportive. She’s like, “Go ahead.” So I booked a one-way ticket to Bali, and I think I was like 20, 20, 21, 22 at this time. I found this medicine man that Elizabeth Gilbert talks about in the book. I got on my scooter. I drove to his little hut and he started poking me with all of these sticks. After he said to me, he said, “You got to stop thinking like your brain’s broken. You think way too much. You need to feel more. “

And I’m like, “Yes, but what do I do?”

Sam Skelly

00:04:49

He’s like, you need to meditate. You need to sit with yourself. And I’m like, “Oh my gosh, okay. Not only do I hate the feeling of being in my body, I also have ADHD.”

So that combination like meditation is not my thing, right?. I would try and meditate and people would always say, just meditate. I’m like, “Oh my goodness. I don’t know if I can do that.” But I’m like, maybe it’s different in Bali after all everyone meditates here.

So I jumped on my scooter and I went to this meditation studio. I ended up missing the meditation class, but the next class on the community board was a breathwork class. I thought like, most people like breath work. Like, what is that? Like, I’ve just, I’ve been breathing for 21, 22 years of my life.

Sam Skelly

00:05:30

Do I really need to take a class? The class was also three hours. Then I was like, super intrigued. I’m like, “Breathing for three hours. What is happening?”

So anyways, divide timing. I’m like, let’s just go. So I walk up the stairs, I opened these big wooden doors. I walk in and everyone’s lying down with blankets and pillows. And I’m like, “What is happening? It looks like some sort of sleepover.”

There’s this guy dressed all in white with a beard. He looks like Jesus. I’m like, what is about to happen? What did I just walk into? He comes over to me and he goes, “Are you ready to go on the ride of your life?”

I kind of look at him weird. And he’s like, “you are going to feel emotions in your body that you’ve not felt forever. Everything that you’ve suppressed is going to come up to be released. You are going to feel joy, bliss, happiness.”

Sam Skelly

00:06:11

He starts going on like this. And this was at a time in my life where I felt two things. I felt anxious and numb. That’s it. You know, I would just toggle, I would feel anxiety. So I would overeat over exercise or restrict. Then I would feel this like sense of numbness. And I would just keep toggling back and forth from these two states. So I was like, “Okay, let’s do it. Let’s try it.”

So we lied down and we started breathing in this breath pattern that I’m going to share with you guys today. And within three minutes, I started feeling this like activation in my body.

Sam Skelly

00:06:53

I started feeling this liveliness. I could finally feel the energy of my heart for the first time, for the first time in so, so, so long, my mind was just calm. I’m like, oh my gosh. I’m like, there’s no thoughts in there. There’s no obsession. There’s no like doer in me that’s trying to like do, do, do, do, do all the, all these things. It’s just chill. Like I feel so good. I feel in my body, I feel aligned. It’s amazing. So after three hours of breathing, which felt by the way, like 15 minutes, because time kind of collapses when you’re in those deep immersive places I left and researched at the time.

Sake Skelly

00:07:34

This was, gosh, this was like 12 years ago, 11 years ago, I researched everything I could about breath work. Like, “What is this? Why did that just happen? What is going on?”

So I went back and I, I said, I said to this Jesus dude, I was like, “Why does the whole world not know this? Like, this is so insane. Like we can change the world if people know that they are their own drug and they can actually access these deep states of joy, bliss love using nothing, but just your breath, like what is going on?”

I ended up healing my eating disorder through breathwork cause I could finally be in my body and discern the difference between an emotional hunger cue and a physical hunger cue.

Sam Skelly

00:08:15

And then, then my first company was born from that, which was Hungry for Happiness. And then I got this ping about four years ago that breathwork needs to be like the industry of breathwork needs to expand and grow because people need to feel this and experience this. So that was sort of the birth of Pause.

Sage Lavine

00:08:35

This is so inspiring. I just have to tell you, so when I got a divorce of 10 years, I also went straight to Bali, like nowhere else to go. Bali, in fact, I filled an entire retreat. So I would have an excuse to go to Bali. You know, my girlfriend…. at one point I was like, I can’t lead a retreat in Bali. I just lost my husband of 10 years. Like I’m a mess. And my girlfriend that was actually leading the retreat with me. She was like, “No, you’re going to Bali.”

She literally came over, packed my suitcase, put me on the plane. We went over like four days early. So we’d have some time to land before my participants came. And she also put me straight on a motor bike. Her name’s Heather Houston. She’s amazing. She’s like a singer song writer.

Sage Lavine

00:09:15

First she sang to me for like 24 hours. I put my head in her lap in the middle of the rainforest and she just sang to me. And like, I just wept and wept and wept. I like something opened in me in Bali. Then after, you know, two or three days of crying, she was like, “It’s time for you to get on a motorbike and learn how to ride it.”

It was like I was born again. Some of the teachers I met over there and some of the experiences I had shaped who I am now. That’s actually where I started my business. So you and I haven’t actually connected on that before. So I have God bumps. And I just want to say for every single one of you that’s listening. You know, Samantha, his journey has been one of her, you know, following her impulses and trusting the cues.

Sage Lavine

00:10:00

If you’re here and your business isn’t where you want it to be..and  yet you’ve been guided, right? You’ve been guided toward certain things. I just want to acknowledge you for even being here, listening. Drop a “yes.” Give us some love in the comments. If this is resonating with you and give us a yes. If you’re also even more willing to just keep following the cues and the impulses and hearing the stories of others that have created success so that you too can do that. And you’re no different than either of us. If we can do it, you can do it. That’s why we’re here. Sage Lavine

Sage Lavine

00:11:27

You’ve now built a seven figure business training people to use the breath to heal themselves. You also train facilitators, which totally inspires me and my breathwork experiences have been some of my most profound experiences. You and I met because we were both keynoting on Lisa Nichols’ stage. You were breathing one minute and I was talking about claiming your purpose of the next minute. And I’m like, “who is this girl?”

I just appreciate the courage that you’ve had so much to come out about your eating disorder to come out about the chronic anxiety and to show people this tool that has changed your life and it’s changing millions of people’s lives.

Sage Lavine

00:12:13

I’d love for you to give us an experience today and also share a little bit about the science behind why this is so profound for those of you that maybe haven’t done as much breathwork.

Sam Skelly

00:12:25

I love this. You know, I think being a leader and growing a business is one of the most fascinating journeys. I have so much love for people who are doing the thing. You know, you have the vision, you have the intuition to, to create something. Then you have the courage to take inspired action to make that happen. I always say to people, “you would not be given the vision. If you didn’t have the tools in order to bring it into fruition.” It just would not happen. Like I would never have a vision to be a neuroscientist because like, that’s not my thing. Right? So there’s like this beautiful awareness, like our desires are so intelligent, right?

Sam Skelly

00:13:05

Our desires are so intelligent. For women and men who have these big visions and are building these businesses, which is probably very different than what your family did…and maybe you feel like the black sheep. That’s a good thing. If you feel like the weird one you’re on the right path, you know what I’m saying?

So for me, part of building a business and part of growing is using this tool of breathwork. So I can constantly downregulate my nervous system from the sympathetic fight or flight into the parasympathetic rest and digest. Like knowing that I have that tool to downregulate my nervous system gives me so much power to take inspired action.

Sam Skelly

00:13:52

When our nervous systems are jacked up and we’re triggered and we’re getting caught in all of these different parts and pieces, and we get an email and then we kind of sync to the vibration of what that is. Then we look at our businesses and our world through that lens…we are not connected to our power.

So what breathwork helps us do is it helps us bring our energy out and up so that we can view our triggers, but we’re not stuck in our triggers. As a business owner, my goodness, I literally do this all day long. Something happens and I’m like, “Okay, I can feel myself being activated by this and I can feel my ego wanting to create a story around this. And I’m going to just take a pause. I’m going to down regulate my nervous system. I’m going to get back into my heart, get back into alignment. And then I’m going to take inspired action from the heart.”

Because whenever we do that in business, you literally cannot mess it up if the energetics are coming from your heart, it’s coming from that grounded place. Coming from this place of, “I am taking this inspired action for the betterment of all humanity.” You can’t mess this thing up. So for people who are on this path, this soul led path where we are following our souls and doing really scary things, it’s important that we understand how our bodies work.

Sam Skelly

00:15:13

It’s important that we understand that we have these systems that are easily triggere. We can easily get thrown into these old timelines. If something happens externally and we feel it, we can get thrown into it when we first had that feeling and it could be five years old, it could be six years old.

So we want to be mindful that the reality is what’s projected onto it. So with the breath, what we’re doing is we’re, we’re actually releasing the grip that we have on reality, right? We can get so fixated.

Sam Skelly

00:15:54

If we’re only viewing things through the mind, the mind, the mind tends to like, it does like one of three things, right? We either grip it like, and we fixate all over it. We obsess, we obsess, we obsess.

O we push it away. Like, “Oh, I don’t want to see that. I don’t want to see that.” Like, “I’m going to push it away.”

Or we suppress it, like push it down into the body. And those three ways are those three survival strategies that are keeping us distant from actually connecting with our power source, which is our hearts and our bodies, right?

This is where all of our power is. So when we do breath work, what happens is we’re actually releasing the mind and we’re allowing ourselves to go into our body, into what I call our central channel, which if you just think of the visual of it, it’s a beam of energy that runs from the top of your head all the way down into the root.

Sam Skelly

00:16:48

So that is, that is our place of stabilization. That is our place of safety. That is our place of intuition. Then from there, we don’t identify with the mind, but we just observe the mind. So, as we breathe, we’re actually breaking down a lot of trapped emotion that’s happening in the body. You probably know Sage, cause you’ve done it. You do breathwork. You’re like, “Why am I crying? Why am I doing, why am I screaming? Or like, why am I shaking?” It’s it’s the body literally knows how to release trapped emotion, anxiety, pain, without the mind. The mind doesn’t know how to do that. The body does.

Sage Lavine

00:17:29

I have become like since starting my business, I have over the years been forced to become like an energy releasing machine. And I tell my clients this I’m like, “you just can’t be a channel for the message that’s coming through you without actually cleaning it out like several times a day.”

We’re all being asked to be a channel for the message, the work that’s coming through. And Sam, you’re such a beautiful emissary of this. You know, I just, so thank you for being here. And you know, this morning, I literally just like erupted in the middle of my breathwork session. I erupted it into tears and screaming. And like something came out of my mouth. It was just like guttural and like primal. And just like this proclamation of like, “This won’t happen again to me!”

Sage Lavine

00:18:11

And I’m just like, “Where did that come from? It’s like clearing it right out of there.”

It’s like something that could have been weighing me down all week long was just like gone. I drank a bunch of water and got back in the game.  I just, I’m excited to give those of you that are watching an experience of this. I just love what you said about really watching, where we’re gripping obsessing, where we’re separating, pushing away, where we’re suppressing, pushing down stuff into the body. Because jumping onto a track of being an entrepreneur, a conscious entrepreneur, a message-based entrepreneur, we all know this is going to be one of the greatest spiritual paths that you’ll ever take and who you get to become the leader that you get to become in the process of building this business is like the reason why to do it.

Sage Lavine

00:19:00

Like, yes, we’re doing it for our clients. Yes, we’re doing it to change the world. But like, you’re the one that’s going to benefit the most if you allow yourself to really grow with the message that’s pulling you forward. And I just feel like this is just such an inspiring conversation. I’m so excited to have it anyway. So let’s dive in.

Sam Skelly

00:19:20

Okay, let’s do it. So for those of you listening, if you’re driving… do this later, for sure. Or if you’re in water, do this later. You can do this practice, either lying down or sitting on a chair with a back, just make sure your body feels nice and safe.

This is an invitation as well. If you don’t want to do this, don’t do it. It’s all about self consent and really checking in with our body. Right? When we talk about the soul led life, allowing yourself to really be guided by your body, it’s really important that we start feeling what our body wants, taking action and what our body wants. And then it builds this beautiful trust up. And that trust is like the medicine for being an entrepreneur, right? Like really trusting ourselves, casting our visions, trusting ourselves.

Sam Skelly

00:20:03

So it really starts with our breath or practices of really checking in with your body. I’m going to teach you the breath pattern. If you want to go slower, please do that. If you want to go deeper, if you want to go faster…just really trusting your own journey, your own experience.

We’ll give you a little taste. We’ll go for about four minutes or so. In the four minutes, you’ll really be able to feel a change of state. So the breath pattern is called the tri active breath. So we want to breathe into the belly first up into the chest and then out through the mouth. So it sounds like this. *breathing sounds*

Sam Skelly

00:20:48

So two in one out. That exhale is a forced exhale. So really pushing the energy out, what you want to think about or feel as you’re doing. This is on those inhales, we’re breathing in, we’re inhaling our true self. We’re inhaling our life force. We’re inhaling our power. We’re inhaling our love, our self-love. And then that exhale is exhaling any residual anxiety, any pain, any tension, maybe you are an empathetic person and it might not even be your energy that you’re holding in your body, but you took it on from somewhere else because your system’s really spongy. So releasing, letting go of anything that is not in the highest service to you and your body, all right, everyone just close down those eyes.

Sam Skelly

00:21:39

As you close down your eyes, just relax your shoulders, relax the space behind your eyes. Just letting everything drop down. Seeing if you can let your body just fall into the chair or the floor beneath you. Just let your system know that you are held. You are held. You are safe. Just let yourself just drop down.

Sam Skelly

00:22:20

The mantra we will call in today is, “I am powerful.”

Feeling that inner power that comes from within that is so connected to your hearts. And let’s just take one deep clearing breath to start with an audible exhale. Now when you’re ready, let’s start the breath pattern together.  *breathing sounds*

Just moving the breath in and out of your body, letting the breath do the work. Breathing in your life force, breathing in the highest version of you.

Exhaling anything in your body that feels stuck. That feels stagnant. Just letting it all go. You are safe to breathe. Letting the breath do the work.

Your body knows exactly what to let go of, what to release, just letting your body do the work. Letting your body do the work.  You are safe to breathe. You are safe to allow. You are safe to exhale.

Sam Skelly

00:25:09

Anything that wants to leave your body. Just let it leave your body with so much ease with so much lightness, letting it all go, letting it all flow. You are safe to breathe.

Now when you’re ready, taking a deep breath in through the nose, holding the breath at the top, as deep as you can, and just relaxing as you hold your breath, planning all of your energy, just land in your body, receiving all that is here for you.

Sam Skelly

00:26:26

Now, when your body is ready, releasing that breath and just letting body breathe itself here. Now in this moment, and from this place, just imagining the vision you have for your future for yourself, 12 months from today, where will you be? Feeling how crystal clear the heart feels and just letting your body soak up all of the energies of peace, contentment, joy, love, and when you’re ready, slowly opening up your eyes, coming back into the space.

Sage Lavine

00:27:58

Mmm. It’s amazing how everything goes away.

Sam Skelly

00:28:05

Literally.

Sage Lavine

00:28:06

It’s like, I know that the times when I’m most effective and as my business has grown, the most powerful thing has been to get my mind out of my way and just be in pure action, you know, to just be just to walk through the process of all the decisions we make in a day, all the risks we take, all the visibility, all the managing of everything, just to walk through it. It’s the mind that causes the suffering. The mastery with which you hold the space and allow us to rest into the breath completely and trust the body and trust that we can keep breathing.

Sage Lavine

00:28:50

For those of you that might’ve had emotions come up, for those of you that might’ve had memories or feelings emerge… I hope that you allowed yourself to rest into that. Samantha’s going to be sharing with you how you can get more of her in a few minutes, but you can go back and listen to this recording again as well –  but to really honor who you’ve become as a facilitator, Sam, it’s just, it’s masterful and I’m, I’m so grateful for the gift.

Sam Skelly

00:29:23

Thank you for that reflection. Thank you. I received that fully.

Sage Lavine

00:29:34

All of the clouding, all of the clouding that  living in this world has done to our being and our  essence. It’s like, you know,we can do all kinds of things, right? Like we can drink caffeine. We can take drugs, we can drink. We can all the things like, you know, and all of those things, one of my friends said, “They’re kind of like trying to take a helicopter or a plane or a shortcut to the top of some mountain, but breathwork is like walking up the mountain one beautiful step at a time, knowing how you got there and being able to stand on that summit and know that you can go back any time you want.” I even get tender.

This is the gift, Sam. This is what you bring.

Sam Skelly

00:30:20

Thank you, my love. It’s beautiful. You know, we are our own healers. You know, we are the medicine for our nervous systems. Like we are the drug. It’s us, you know? And when we can really get with that, knowing like, “We are the drug.” It’s in our bodies. Like we can heal all these broken pieces, all of these parts that we’re stuck with and didn’t get the nourishment that they needed from our caretakers at a young age. Like we can take, we can take responsibility for that. Now. It’s just beautiful.

Sage Lavine

00:30:53

It’s so beautiful. It’s just delicious. You know, what do you recommend folks that are drawn to this? They want to do more with you. I know that you’ve got a facilitator training that you’re opening up doors to soon. What do you recommend people do that are curious about taking about taking a next step?

Sam Skelly

00:31:14

Yeah. So for people who are called to do this work in the world, they see the vision of what breath work is going to be and they see the potential in that and then they want to be a leader of breathwork. We have a facilitator training, which is a six month deep immersive training. You mentioned before Sage, which I love. It’s like, ‘Yes, we’re building these businesses and we’re gaining these tools, but who we become in that process is the most valuable thing ever.”

So when I see people going through this six month training, it’s like, “Yes, when you graduate after six months, you are going to be a certified trauma-informed breathwork facilitator who can start a business and generate income and who you become in that process.”

Sam Skelly

00:32:03

It’s like you are going to become just a deeply embodied version of you who has a skillset that can serve part of like the Pause Breathwork facilitator training is the longest on the market and the most intense… we use the word mastery. I use that often and mastery for me comes from embodiment.

You know, like if I was to teach through my mental pillar and through like cognitively it wouldn’t land. When we teach through our bodies, through like the sematic experience , “Soma ” means body, we’re giving people a transmission, not just education.

So that’s really what our training is about is turning you from, you know, we call it like that, turning you from a hectic healer into a masterful healer. Hectic healer being like, “I know I have this gift. I know I’m here to help people. I know I’m here to change the world. I just don’t have the right path yet.”

Sam Skelly

00:32:59

Or,  “I don’t know the tools yet.” And so we want to walk people through the process of not only understanding the trauma and breathwork science of breathwork embodiment, facilitator mastery, but then being able to generate an income and really being, you know, having that holistic approach as well. So we start November 1st. I’m so excited.

Sage Lavine

00:33:19

Oh my gosh, I’m excited to help you get the word out. And if you guys go to pausebreathwork.com/sage, you guys can check that out, fill out a little application and just get on the phone with one of Samantha’s coaches. They’re amazing. Samantha’s built up the most incredible heart-based movement full of just people who are here to change the world together. Sam, I’m just so again, grateful for the science behind what you teach, the practical results. And I know for me, I did my yoga teacher training, not because I knew I was going to be a yoga teacher for the rest of my life. But because I knew that was a practice I needed to like anchor into my soul.

Sage Lavine

It has served me year after year after year because of the deep transmission, becoming someone different. You know, if breathwork facilitation had been around back when I did that, I would have absolutely immersed myself. I just highly recommend for those of you who feel the call to have a practice like this anchored so deeply inside of you, that you just never have to get tipped over. Like you said, I mean, you said it really well. It’s like as CEOs, as business owners, we open up an email, we feel things. One of our team members, you know, does something, we feel things, you know, one of our clients does whatever they do…we feel things.

It’s just like, if we don’t have like ninja level tools to just keep moving on through those feelings, like good luck, right?

So wherever you get those ninja tools, keep developing them because you deserve that and you deserve this and you deserve to move through all of the sensitivities of being a leader, getting more visible, growing a business and being all the other things you are in the world. A wife, a husband, a rockstar, a sister, a mom, a leader, right? All of your life deserves you and your replenishment and your ability to, you know, resource and be your best self.

I really can’t think of anything more powerful in terms of getting you there. So let’s give that website out one more time.

Sam Skelly

It’s pausebreathwork.com/sage. The application process takes five minutes. It tells a few little details about yourself. Get on the phone with the team and they’ll tell you all about the program and, and all the fun little details.

I just have one final question to ask. So your mom sent you off to Bali to meet Ketut, right?

You came back and you’re like, “Mom, I think I’m going to do this thing with the breath” Was she so proud of you? Is she a little confused at first? I know my mom was.

Sam Skelly

00:36:30

Yeah. I think she’s still confused. She loves it. She’s like my biggest fan, but she like “So what are you doing?”

Sage Lavine

My mom too! My mom is like, “I’m telling all my friends, but like, can you explain it to me?”

Sam Skelly

00:36:42

Well, it’s funny now. ‘Cause now I’m like my mom’s friends, like they’re on our app and they are like doing breathwork. My mom’s like, “All my friends are doing like your stuff. Maybe I should start.”

I’m like, “Oh, let’s go!” So funny. So funny.

Sage Lavine

00:37:00

Oh my God. Send your mom my love. Tell her thanks for giving birth to you.  Thanks for giving birth to Sam. Yeah. I’ll see you on the other side, girl! Send some love in the comments. Thank her for being here. We’re so glad to have you girl and yeah. Keep rocking it. The world needs you.
